Power systems analysis software

Simulation software and power systems analysis is global practice in electrical engineering. Initially, they were used to quickly solve the non-linear load flow problem and calculate short circuit currents, but their use has been extended too many other areas such as power system stability, protection, and coordination, contingency/reliability, economic modeling, etc. There are some software available by which load flow analysis can be performed as-

PSAF

PSAF is a Canadian Application Software developed by CYME International Inc, for system studies and related works have been extensively used in load flow studies. Extensive integrated software programs perform the analyses of transmission and simulations. PSAF is equipped with CYMVIEW that generates any kind of charts for all the analysis modules such as CYMSTAB, CYMHARMO, CYM-Motor Starting, etc. CYMVIEW is capable of managing the outputs of different modules and storing results for any number of simulations pertaining to the same module. PSAF software package is an integrated power system analysis that includes the electrical equipment parameter estimation for creating the network one-line diagram, graphic user Interface, associated database and database manager. It is directly applicable to both utility-type and industrial three-phase electric power systems. This database built in a wide selection of network equipment that has contains industry standard equipment characteristics. It offers both graphical and tabular data entry modes, plotting and customizing the simulation reports, user-preferred single-line diagram drawing options and sophisticated facilities for reporting.
CYME PSAF that develops an integrated suite for cable ampacity calculations and electromagnetic transients, as well as standalone application modular in power engineering. The integrated suite has a range of functions including load flow, short circuit, OPF, load balancing, load allocation/estimation, optimal capacitor placement, network forecaster, reliability, transient stability, harmonic analysis, dynamic motor starting, contingency, protection coordination, switching optimization, GIS overlay, earthling grid design and arc flash analysis.

DIgSILENT (Power Factory)

DIgSILENT Power Factory is a German company that develops; Windows-based integrated power systems modeling and analysis package. It’s easy to use, including high-end applications in new technologies and caters for all standard power system analysis needs, such as distributed generation and wind power and the handling of very large power systems. In addition to the stand-alone solution, the Power Factory engine can be smoothly integrated into GIS, DMS, and EMS supporting open system standards.
Some of the functions include electromagnetic transients analysis, network reduction, overhead line, and cable parameter calculation, power flow analysis, fault analysis, state estimation, protection analysis, distribution network analysis, motor starting analysis, OPF, stability analysis, contingency and reliability assessments, modal analysis, harmonic load flow. Features include a C++ style scripting language called the DPL and a single, integrated, flexible database [6].

MILSOFT (WindMil®)

MILSOFT Utility Solutions are a Texas-based company that develops WindMil®, an electric distribution system planning, and analysis package. Functions include load flow and voltage drop modeling, reliability analysis, contingency, and sectionalizing studies, OPF, short circuit and fault current calculations, protective device coordination and arc flash hazard analysis.

MathWorks (Sim Power Systems)

MathWorks the makers of general-purpose mathematical software MATLAB, also develop a power systems simulation program. Sim Power Systems is a tool that extends MATLAB’s Simulink and provides models of many components used in power systems, including three-phase machines, libraries of application-specific models and electric drives such as wind-power generation and Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS). Harmonic analysis calculation of load flow, other key power system analyses are automated and totals Harmonic Distortion (THD).
